The Romans believed Elysium to be the final resting place for the souls of the heroic and the virtuous. Soldiers who fought bravely and lived honorable lives would find themselves spending eternity in the Elysian Fields/Elysian Plains. Elysium is a Pre Christian version of Heaven, yet regular people who lived good lives did not qualify for the best resting place. They would live there after life in the Asphodel Meadows which was a lesser version of Elysium. People Such as Julius Ceasar, Aeneas, Hector and Alexander The Great were residents of Elysium. Hades was where cowards and treacherous people suffered in the Roman version of Hell.
